Do your music career dreams seem daunting to you?

Hi there and a belated Happy New Year!

Over the last two years I have often talked to you about your music career dreams - your ultimate dreams - your Mount Everest. But recently I have been talking to a number of musicians and producers who tell me that their ultimate dreams often seem out of reach and rather daunting. Can you relate to this? Are you a musician or a composer or someone working in the music industry with big ideas and dreams, but you are stopped in your tracks by the sheer magnitude of your task?

On one hand it is a great thing to have a big dream and to aspire to something magnificent, that you feel particularly passionate about, but on the other hand if it doesn't feel realistic to you right now, then you may find yourself being put off striving for it.

What do I say to all of you musicians and producers when you tell me this? I say, "STOP right there!" Who says that you have to achieve it right now? Your dream is all the more worthwhile when you have to take really small steps towards achieving it AND the journey is usually as rewarding to you as the actual achievement of your ultimate goal - if it was that easy you wouldn't get so much pleasure from your achievements!

So let's take a look at what this is all about. Often you will have great ideas and talk at great length about them, but never actually get off your backside and start seriously working towards your goals and dreams - why? Fear. Fear of failure, fear of looking stupid in other's eyes, fear of not being good enough - the 'fear' list goes on…

Your fear can manifest in a symptomatic way - in a lack of confidence for example. And this can drive your behaviour - procrastination springs to mind as well as just not starting your music project! What does F.E.A.R stand for? False Evidence Appearing Real! That's right - and the reason that you know deep down that this is true, is because whenever you ask yourself for evidence to support your fear - you always come up with more evidence to suggest the opposite! In other words, most of you will provide more evidence to suggest you have the skills, experience and the abilities to achieve what you want, than not.

So your lack of confidence or your fear keeps you in the comfort zone, stops you from moving forward and making a change or progressing towards your most passionate, life-long dreams of becoming a successful artist or producer or composer or manager in the music industry.

So what can you do about it? The following Tips may be useful in alleviating your struggle!

Tip 1 - Gaining Confidence. I invite you to take a few minutes to look at the following questions, have a good think to yourself about your answers and then to write those answers down.

Imagine you had 100% confidence:
  • How would you behave differently?
  • How would you dress?
  • What would your relationships with others be like?
  • What would you think of yourself?
  • What would you say to yourself?
I am now going to make the assumption that you will have come up with some positive answers and I want you to stay in your 100% positive zone and go into Tip 2…

Tip 2 - Theatre of your Mind. Still using your imagination and still holding onto your confidence, I'd like you to close your eyes (if it makes the following easier!), and see in your minds eye a stage in a theatre. You may see the curtains drawn back on each side of the stage - really let your imagination create the picture.

Now I'd like you to create the backdrop scene of your ultimate music career dream on this stage in your imagination - at this point I don't want you to see yourself there on the stage. For example, your music career dream may be to receive an award for your long-standing contribution to the music industry - in which case you could imagine a podium on the stage, with a microphone and somebody of your choosing to hand the award to you. You may also imagine an audience packed with many famous musicians. Use your imagination to create an image on stage of your dream.

Now I invite you to transport yourself onto the stage - remember you are 100% confident! Now let your imagination play out your ultimate music career dream. Look to see what is happening, and feel what it is like to achieve your dream- let your senses, emotions and feelings really come into play here. Stay in your theatre of your mind for a little while to see what happens.

Gradually I want you to gently transport yourself back to the here and now. You may feel the need to write down how you felt achieving your music career dream - did you learn anything that you didn't know before? How was it to feel that confident and to know that you had succeeded? Did you feel exhilarated? Describe to yourself how your journey to achieving your success felt, and how it was worth all the time and effort.

I hope that you are still feeling the effects of that 100% confident you. But if you are still experiencing a niggle of doubt then I would say read on to Tip3.

Tip 3 - Scale down your dreams. If your dream remains a bit daunting, then another way to instil a bit more confidence in yourself is to scale your dream down to a size that you feel is more manageable right now. For instance, if your music career dream is do undertake a world tour, but at the present time, you've only done a couple of gigs, then a scale down version may be to arrange a mini tour of the county you live in - you get my drift I'm sure.

By scaling down your dreams you build up the confidence necessary for you to believe you can achieve the big one! And by undertaking a scaled down version of your dream, you will also learn the skills and experiences needed to challenge yourself for your big dream.

One final tip is to have fun with your scaled down version - if it's fun now - just think how achieving your big dream will feel!

I hope you have found this newsletter helpful. You may find it useful to have someone take you through Tip 2 particularly, and of course if you need help to work on your fears and lack of confidence, then please email me to arrange a free consultation call to explore how I can help you further.
