Are you living in Trust or Fear? As a musician or artist or composer do you write your music and lyrics in trust that a) someone else will like it? Or b) that there is a market out there to sell it? Or do you write your music and lyrics in fear? Fear that no-one will like it, let alone buy it? Alternatively as a record label exec or as an artist manager, are you living in trust that you will be able to sell your artists work? Or are you living in fear that you will not? Living in trust or fear can impact on your work greatly. Living in trust can give you the confidence, self belief and an inner knowing that you are going to succeed in your music career. Whereas living in fear will almost certainly give you the opposite. Let's take a look at the highly successful band called The Enemy. A little over 18 months ago you would not have heard of them. But it is only 18 months ago that they formed the band and have gone from touring around the pubs in their home town of Coventry to getting a record deal, releasing a number 1 album, having 3 top 20 singles and have toured around various parts of the world! The reason that I mention them is because of an interview that I was recently reading in a local magazine called Exposed (November 2007 edition). The lead singer Tom Clarke was quoted as saying "…we were always confident we'd be successful". The interviewer then went on to ask "How important is confidence in being successful?" Tom's response was: "…you've got to have self-belief if you're gonna make it or you may as well not bother…No-one gets anywhere without it". Tom Clarke is living in trust. Trust in that his self-belief is going to make him successful and it has! On the other hand, let's take a look at the band, Franz Ferdinand. They again are a highly successful band. However in an article abut them in NME (16 June 2007) it talks about how the band were working on their 3rd album and how they were "road-testing" their new songs at a series of secret, intimate gigs around the globe. Why the intimate gigs? "…when we're playing new songs, I wanted to be able to see people and see how they were reacting" said Alex Kapranos. The band are having a change in musical direction and "before we release a new album, [we want] to test the new songs out". It could be seen that Franz Ferdinand are living in fear. Let's face it they have a large fan-base, and have been very successful in the sale of their first two albums, they may be fearing that their new direction in music may just lose all that they have built so far. If the reaction to their new songs is a negative one - I suspect they will be thinking again! So what about you - are you living in trust or fear with your music? If in trust that's fantastic and I know you will go far and be highly successful in your music endeavours. However, if you are living in fear then the following Tips may be able to help you make a shift towards living in trust… Tip 1- Belief helps you reach success. Trusting in your abilities, skills and experiences helps you to build self belief and confidence. Confidence and self belief in turn helps you to become successful. Your beliefs are all shaped from your past experiences and will make an impact on the way you think, act and feel in the present moment. They will also shape your expectations of your future. So if your past experiences have created some negative beliefs about your music career, then it stands to reason that your expectations of your future music career could well be negative too. So the way to address this is to think about a positive skill or quality that you are certain that you possess (and if this is in a musical capacity - so much the better!) and remember as many specific times as you can, when you were using that skill or quality well. Now think about your ultimate music career dream and ask yourself how can you use that skill or quality to shape or even to create your future music career? Write down all the different ways you could make it happen. For example: you are an excellent piano player (can you hear the positive belief and confidence in that statement?). By being an excellent piano player and having an ultimate music career dream of being in a highly successful band, you can use your skill, to start improvising and writing your own music. From there you could collaborate with other musicians to write songs and form a band, perform gigs and you're on your way… Tip 2 Attract success into your life. There is a universal law, called the 'law of attraction' that you may well have heard of. Essentially what this law of nature says is 'what you ask for you will receive'. And without realising it, through our thoughts, we are constantly asking for things and receiving them - the trouble is that quite often we are asking in the negative and the things we fear the most happening, come to us! I personally experienced this just recently. I was asked to do a reading at a wedding ceremony. Fine - no problem with that - I'm used to speaking in front of many people. However what I feared the most, was slipping or falling over, whilst walking on the highly polished floors of the church in my high heals! This worry kept niggling away in the back of my mind and of course on the day, my fear came true - yep whilst walking up to the podium, I slipped - luckily not a lot, and it mostly went unnoticed, but never the less, I had attracted what I hadn't wanted. The reason this happened is that the law of attraction doesn't recognise the word 'not' or 'don't' and other such words, so if you were to utter the words or have the thought, "You don't want to fail in your music career", all the law will hear is "You want to fail in your music career" Being the total opposite of your desire! The more you focus on what you don't want, the more you will attract it! So to attract more music success into your life and to start making the things you really want come to you, you need to alter and/or check the words you use in your thoughts and when you speak out loud. This can be made easier for you as you can alert yourself to the fact that you are thinking negatively, by the feelings you are having. Negative thoughts will often make us feel bad - you can get those feelings in the pit of your stomach or elsewhere in your body. If you start to feel bad - stop and ask yourself what am I thinking? What is it that is making me feel bad? Once you know the cause - just remember you will be attracting that negative thing. So then it is time to alter your thinking and the words you use. You need to be clear as to what it is you really want - so you could say "I'd like to receive lots of money from playing my music". You only need to ask once and the law of attraction will start to sort it for you. All you need is to trust and believe and success will be on its way to you. So are you living in trust or fear?
